Amber Gemstone Information

Amber
Amber

Amber is not strictly a gemstone or mineral, but a fossilized sap from prehistoric trees that has aged over millions of years. It is commonly a yellow golden colour, but Amber also can be found in shades of milky white, red-orange, green, black and even (very rarely) violet. Amber stone artefacts and jewellery have been found in many places, and this may be because it was possibly an item of trade that ended up in the hands of those who had the wealth.

Many of the artefacts made of amber had insects within them. These were probably thought to have magical virtues, as they were carved into hunting talismans, worn to ensure safe and abundant hunting. Approx 45 million years ago, pine trees in the Baltic and Scandinavian countries, discharged resins.

The amber resin from these trees, went solid and later became fossilised. This process took thousands of years. Over time this resin moved from the pine forests and ended up close to the coastal regions from where it ended up at the bottom of the sea where it fossilised. Again, over millions of years this fossilized resin was brought to the surface by glaciers and deposited on the land, where it has been found since that time.
