Chakras – An introduction

The Sanskrit word Chakra, pronounced Sha-kra literally translates to wheel or disk of energy throughout the body. There are seven main chakras which align the spine, starting from the base of the spine through to the crown of the head. To visualize a chakra in the body, imagine a swirling wheel of energy where matter and consciousness meet. This invisible energy, called Prana, is vital life force, which keeps us vibrant, healthy, and alive. These swirling wheels of energy correspond to our nerve centres in the body. Every organ, gland and body system is connected to a Chakra and each chakra is connected to a colour vibrational frequency. Each of the seven main Chakras contains bundles of nerves and major organs as well as our psychological, emotional, and spiritual states. As everything is moving, it’s important that our seven main Chakras stay open and aligned. Blockages of energies in these Chakra’s result in illness.

The seven main Chakra’s are:
Base – located at the base of the spine at the tail bone.
Sacral – located in the Lower abdomen, approx 2 inches below the navel and 2 inches in.
Solar Plexus – located in the upper abdomen.
Heart – Located middle of the chest area, in line with the heart.
Throat – Located in the throat area
Third Eye – located on the forehead between the eyes.
Crown – Located on top of the head.

Chakra’s and colour

Each Chakra, not only has a position and related organ but also a colour. Colour and light are inseparable. Each colour of the visible light rays has a different wavelength and vibrational frequency, which affects us differently. Red has the longest wavelength and the slowest vibrational frequency, which we recognize as warm and stimulating.Alternatively violet has the shortest wavelength and the fastest frequency and we recognize this as a cool and calming energy. We receive light and colour information through our eyes, that stimulates the retina and its cells. These impulses, which travel through the optic nerve to the visual cortex of the brain via the pituitary gland, trigger other glands and their hormone secretion to various parts of the body. Many body functions are stimulated or held back by light and the different colours of light therefore affect our Chakra system.

As light and its colours physically affect glands and hormones, they will also have a marked influence on our moods and feelings. Science has proven that certain colours can calm the mind while others stimulate mental activity. We need light energy for nourishing our brain, our emotions and our physical body as well as our light bodies and especially our Chakras. Light can also enter through our skin and our breath. We can also receive additional colour energy through foods, herbs, vitamins, aromatherapy, sound, minerals, clothing and decorations in our surroundings. The seven main Chakra colours are:

chakras
Root – Red
Sacral – Orange
Solar plexus – Yellow
Heart – Green or Pink
Throat – Blue
Third Eye – Indigo
Crown – Violet or Crystal

When our chakras are healthy and glowing strongly we feel good. By having about us or using Chakra products, wearing Chakra jewellery or using Chakra stones in healing we are giving focus to this state of balance. If we have good intention we may draw situations to us that help us to change and help our Chakras to find or remain in balance.

As there is so much information involved we have dedicated a separate page to each Chakra.
